union church of manila’s sanctuary

by JennyO on April 7, 2008

Here are more views of Union Church of Manila’s Sanctuary area, taken last Sunday. I shot this through glass, from the Cry Room (for nursing mothers and infants, where I was assigned as an usher) on the second level, before the Traditional (second) service started, as the church was filling up.

The UCM Chancel Choir warms up before the service starts.

Towards the back of the Sanctuary is another projection screen (for the convenience of pastors/speakers), behind which is the Control Room for sound and video, a “traffic operations center” (TOC) as we would say in broadcasting. To the right on the second level is the Overflow Chapel, where we seat latecomers when the Sanctuary is full. On the level above that, screened by wooden lattices, are the pastors’ and administrators’ offices.

The Overflow Chapel is not glassed-in and overlooks the Sanctuary. Beside it is the TOC. UCM is blessed to have good equipment for it. Beyond that is a Columbarium, all done in cream and beige marble. It’s a serene place.

Since it was the first Sunday of April, it was a Communion service, so one of the kitchen helpers brought up cubes of wheat bread and little plastic cups of grape juice and wine in silver holders. Looking closely at the dish for the wine holders, I was intrigued by the inscription:

Presented to beloved former pastor Rev. S. B. Rossiter, D.D., by friends of the North Presbyterian Church of New York City for use in the Presbyterian Church in Manila, P.I. Dec 27th 1903.

Perhaps the Presbyterian Church of Manila was one of those which merged or united to create UCM in 1914. This silver dish is almost 105 years old, and since then presumably has been in continuous use for the church. I was struck by the continuity of the church across time and space.

In his sermon, Pastor Steve (Rev. Steve Ruetschle) unveiled the new UCM logo, created for free by a Christian graphics designer based in Seattle, WA.

From a century-old silver Communion dish to a brand-new logo designed with the latest graphics software, UCM is blessed to have received so many gifts of love from so many people from all over the world since it was first founded.

Going back to the logo, the various colors represent the diversity of people at UCM; the circular design bisected by a symmetrical cross echoes that of the Sanctuary cross on the ceiling, as do the “shards” that make up each quarter. The symmetrical cross is an ancient Christian device and hearkens back to Byzantine religious art, the Maltese cross, the Celtic cross, and other such depictions.

For the past four Sundays or so, I’ve been assigned to usher at the Cry Room or the adjoining Conference Room (which takes in the overflow from the Overflow Chapel) and am quite comfortable with the work. “Crowd control” of this kind is very easy compared to what I’ve had to do in events management for horseracing, where people are generally more difficult to deal with moreover since the activities are of a  worldly nature.

That Sunday, as Pastor Steve discussed chapter 4 of Ephesians on “spiritual gifts”, tying it into Pastor Rick Warren of Saddleback Church’s “SHAPE” (Spiritual Gift – Heart – Abilities – Personality – Experience) concept of service from his book “Purpose-Driven Life”, I realized that God gave me this “experience” in work, and many others in life, so I would be able to use them in church to serve others.

After Traditional service, I ran down to the Sala to serve as a “First Friends” greeter. It was a very sunny day, and I could not resist taking a snap of the rock garden just outside the Sala window. Lush foliage is just one of the many benefits of living in a tropical country!

inside union church of manila

by JennyO on March 17, 2008

Here’s a view of the Union Church of Manila Sanctuary from the Conference Room at the third level.

The Flags of Nations flank each side of the altar. In front is a wooden cross covered with prayers, which will be burned and the ash used for marking foreheads on Ash Wednesday next year. UCM is, I think, the only church in Manila with a pipe organ.

There are three worship services on Sundays – Contemporary (830am), Traditional (1030am), and Blended (1230pm). On Wednesdays, there is a Communion service at 12 noon. Small Discipleship group meetings are held throughout the week in homes and at church.

Holy Week is very special at UCM, with many activities such as the Agape Meal (sharing of bread, soup, and fruit) and Washing of the Feet service at 6pm on Maundy Thursday; Service of Darkness with the UCM Chancel Choir performing Lucio San Pedro’s “Seven Last Words of Christ” at 630pm on Good Friday; and on Easter, Sunrise Service at 530am at Legaspi Active Park followed by an Easter Family Breakfast at 7am at UCM’s Fellowship Hall. There will also be 830am and 1030am worship services on Easter Sunday.

sunday is for worship and flowers.

by JennyO on March 2, 2008

Every Sunday the kids and I attend the second service (Traditional) at Union Church of Manila. After each service (there are three), juice, coffee, and cookies are served in the Fellowship Hall. Second Service usually has the most attendees.

Fellowship Hall

My ministry is with the “First Friends”. I serve as a host in the UCM Sala, where I meet and greet newcomers, offering food and drinks. The Sala’s window looks out onto a garden.

This is the left side of the Sala, a cozy little corner with a waterfall out the window.

The entire room is long and very inviting. It’s often used for Bible Study and Small Discipleship Group meetings. It is where our Friday Small Group meets. (Do join us on Fridays at 7pm.)

After worship, the kids and I have lunch at a mall. Today it was Zaifu at Powerplant, our “home mall”. We had our usual ebi tempura, tamago maki, and dynamite roll.

When the belly-growling had subsided, off we went to our “mother ship” to browse through the latest books and pens. My latest purchase from this store (just yesterday) was The Lost Ark of the Covenant by Prof. Tudor Parfitt.

Next stop, the lobby - to gawk at the beautiful flower arrangements of a local ikebana society.

Orchids, anthuriums, fronds, ferns, and foliage were all creatively displayed in earthen, ceramic, or wooden containers to best show off the beauty of nature.

The more I look around, the more I see how wondrous are the things that God has made, and how much He loves us by heaping upon us blessing upon blessing.

warm and inviting

by JennyO on February 21, 2008

Every Wednesday afternoon, I have to attend a meeting in the Legaspi Village area of Makati. It’s a place that is very familiar to me; I must’ve visited it hundreds of times. Just yesterday, I actually opened my eyes and saw my surroundings. What a blessing to live in the moment, be fully aware of sights, sounds, and sensations that we usually take for granted.

First I dropped by Union Church of Manila for the Wednesday noon communion service. It’s a quiet time of prayer that will bring you closer to God. Worship services on Sunday are at 830 am (Contemporary), 1030am (Traditional), and 1230pm (Blended).

Very close by on the corner is a Starbucks. After the service, I dropped by there for a Grande Raspberry Mocha, non-fat no-whip. The place is warm and inviting.

A new batch of merchandise has come in; all the Valentine stuff has been taken away. Now it’s the “Spring” theme. I look forward to what the “bearista” bears will be wearing. Right now they are dressed up as sweetie butterflies with padded wings. The blue one’s wings are stripily cute! Both have pretty embroidered motifs on their chests.

The glass cases are full of baked goodies, sandwiches, juices, and bottled water.

I like the way trees line the streets in Legaspi Village. This is along Rufino Street, rather quiet at lunchtime.

Church and coffee, teddy bears and trees – we are so very blessed.
