katrina and the waves: walking on sunshine

Alright, you can call me cheesy, you can call me stuck in the ’80s, and you can call me collect from Timbuktu, but I dare anyone to keep their feet from tappin’and their butts from shakin’ once they hear this song rip. One of the iconic songs from the era of big hair and bad clothes, it’s my all-time favorite for the catchy melody and cheerful lyrics, guaranteed to banish the blues.

This song was written by Kimberley Rew (who also played lead guitar) for the band’s second album of the same name. It was their first Top Forty hit. The other band members were Katrina Leskanich (vocals, rhythm guitar), Alex Cooper (drums), and Vince de la Cruz (bass).

I love how it starts, with twelve solid seconds of bold backbeat.  Any tune with good drums gets my attention. That’s why drummers are my favorite band members! Pay no mind to the low-budget video production (this was during the infancy of MTV, remember) and the silly dancing. The song’s the thing!

Come on, you love it. You know you do. Click through and start dancing!

Walking on Sunshine (Katrina and the Waves, 1985)

I used to think maybe you loved me, now baby I’m sure
And I just can’t wait till the day when you knock on my door
Now everytime I go for the mailbox, gotta hold myself down
Cause I just can’t wait till you write me you’re comin’ around

Now I’m walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
I’m walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
I’m walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
And don’t it feel good
All right now
And don’t it feel good
Oh yeah

I used to think maybe you loved me, now I know that it’s true
And I don’t wanna spend my whole life just a waitin’ for you
Now I don’t want you back for the weekend, not back for a day (no no no)
I said baby I just want you back and I want you to stay

I’m walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
I’m walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
I’m walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
And don’t it feel good
All right now
And don’t it feel good
All right now

Walkin’ on sunshine… Walkin’ on sunshine
I feel alive, I feel a love
I feel a love that’s really real
I feel alive, I feel a love
I feel a love that’s really real
I’m on sunshine baby (whoa, oh yeah)
I’m on sunshine baby (whoa)

I’m walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
I’m walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
I’m walking on sunshine (whoa oh)
And don’t it feel good
(All Right Now)
And don’t it feel good
(I say it, I say it, I say it again, now)
And don’t it feel good
(All Right Now)
And don’t it feel good…
